Oasis: Definitely Maybe (8~10/10)

As a mid-nineties teenager I, along with every other kid my age, was a die-hard Oasis fan. Nowadays though (and for the last couple of decades if I’m honest), this sits on my shelf and gets an outing once every blue moon.

1993 / Creation

So the surprise reunion (it was always definitely maybe going to happen), and a bit of space between the music and the memories, gives me a good enough reason to take it for another spin.

For me (and my older, more critical ears) it’s just not as ‘good’ as I think we all want it to be. Musically, lyrically, it’s decent at best (I mean, Shakermaker?). But that’s never been the point, or where the magic is. It’s in the power of Oasis‘ immortal, undeniably universal anthems to transport us, together, to a time and place that wasn’t actually better, but we all believed in our collective hearts that it would be. And whatever I think of it today, I can’t deny the hold it still has on me, and always will.

As a set of songs, eight. As a moment, an anthem for an entire movement, ten.
